Rain polishes Red Bull Crashed Ice track

Daytime rainshowers in Quebec City on Friday will have no effect on the Red Bull Crashed Ice competition. With weather expected to significantly improve in the evening and sunshine predicted for Saturday, both Friday evening's team competition and Saturday's finals will continue as planned. The rainwater that freezes on the track creates a smooth, strong surface, so, as Stefan Fiegl from the ice-maintenance team at AST explains, "The rain is actually good for the ice - whole track has a cooling system, just like an ice rink, and it has also been constructed for excess water to run off. We're ready for this evening and for the big finals tomorrow."

Everything is done manually to make the ice as smooth as possible. The team is always working on the ice between each training session to make it shiny for race day. The weather is a crucial factor and the crew must constantly watch the track and adjust the cooling system to maintain best conditions to keep the ice perfectly cool until the race. With the help of MORECAST, the ice-maintenance team ensures the ice stays in perfect condition, by knowing exactly when it's too cold or too warm.
