Red Bull Crashed Ice title favourites hope to get back on track

Red Bull Crashed Ice in Saint Paul in 2013
Red Bull Crashed Ice returns to Saint Paul, and the frozen banks of the Mississippi River, for the third straight year.

Red Bull Crashed Ice returns to Saint Paul, and the frozen banks of the Mississippi River, for the third straight year on February 22 as the Ice Cross Downhill World Championship soars to new heights in the United States. The favourites who struggled in the season opener in Helsinki are hoping to bounce back in the Ice Cross World Championship's second stop.

Americans Cameron Naasz, Reed Whiting and Adam Green will be leading the USA's charge down one of the most challenging ice cross downhill tracks ever built when the 2014 world championship moves to the United States for the second stop of the four-leg world tour. Austria's Marco Dallago, who won the opening stop in Helsinki on February 1, will be looking to extend his championship lead in front of an expected crowd of 100,000 fans, while defending champion Derek Wedge, of Switzerland, and 2012 champ Kyle Croxall, of Canada, will be looking to get their title hopes back on course after disappointing results in Helsinki.

Hundreds of American hopefuls have taken part in eight qualifying events in the United States ahead of Saint Paul with dreams of following in the footsteps of Naasz, Whiting and Green, who began their careers in ice cross downhill in Saint Paul.

Germany's Fabian Mels got a strong second behind Dallago in Helsinki and France's Pacôme Schmitt, a newcomer in 2013, got his first podium with third place in Finland. Canada will be looking for revenge in Saint Paul after getting shut out in Helsinki. Canada's Scott Croxall was fourth and has yet to win a race despite being in the final four in seven of the last nine races.

Saint Paul has turned into an annual feature on the Red Bull Crashed Ice calendar with its challenging track and enthusiastic crowds that gather on the hill in front of the imposing Cathedral of Saint Paul despite temperatures that plunge far below freezing. The Saint Paul race has helped make ice cross downhill an increasingly popular sport in the United States. The 2014 track will be a gruelling 430 metres long with a vertical drop of 40 metres and features a Cathedral step-up, a hair-raising U-turn, a Wall Ride and a Kicker just before the finish.
