The 2014 season will mark his sixth year competing in ice cross downhill, and 23-year-old Scott Croxall still strives for first place, skating ahead of his competitors and stepping once again on the podium. Currently standing in fourth position in the overall world standings, Scott has competed in 16 ice cross downhill races around the world since 2009. He hopes to not only finish on top on Canadian soil in front of his friends and family, but also in the overall standings for 2014. Growing up in Mississauga, Ontario, Scott enjoyed hockey, simultaneously perfecting numerous skills to be a standout player, and feels ice cross downhill is no different. "To be successful at Red Bull Crashed Ice," Scott explains, "you need great speed, strength, and balance." After watching his brother, Kyle Croxall, competing in Red Bull Crashed Ice in 2008, Scott decided to register for the chance to compete in the 2009 Canadian edition and qualified. For the very first time, both brothers took part in the event in 2009 in Quebec City in front of thousands of fans and family members.
How long have you been competing in ice cross downhill?
I have been competing for five years - my first race was Quebec City, Canada, in 2009.
What first got you interested in the sport?
The first time I was interested in this sport was when I went to watch my older brother Kyle compete in Quebec City in 2008. I was too young to qualify at the time but was amazed to see how awesome the atmosphere, track construction, athletes, racing and competition was. Watching it in person, I knew this would be a sport for me.
If there is one piece of advice that you could offer new riders, what would it be?
My advice would be to learn the track and know where the danger zones might be - this is where you need to be cautious in your training runs so that you don't get injured before racing even starts!
What is your best result or favourite memory at a Red Bull Crashed Ice?
My favourite memory will always be the first time I made it onto the podium in Quebec City 2010 as an 18-year-old.
Which stop on the 2014 calendar are you most looking forward to and why?
I am looking forward to all stops on the tour but most of all the race in Quebec City because it is the championship final and draws the most fans out of any sporting event in Canada. I always look forward to seeing my friends and family at the finish line.
Who is your favourite sportsman or athlete?
My favourite athlete is Travis Pastrana who I met before a race in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and he gave me some advice I will never forget.
