German salesman Fabian Mels was active at an early age and has been playing defense in ice hockey since 2004. Mels made his debut in ice cross downhill at the Red Bull Crashed Ice event in Munich in 2011 and was the best-placed rookie in the season. The German put in a series of impressive displays to finish 11th overall in 2011, and improved on that last season, finishing sixth overall. "It's pretty weird standing next to all the real pros," says Mels, of his first time on the track. "At first they have no respect for you. But when they see you compete, it changes." Mels says he has no real tactic for attacking the track, "but you get a feeling for the ideal lines that you need to take in order to get down fast. My very first run was very exciting," adds Mels. He thrives on high-speed tracks and has proven he has got what it takes – courage, strategy, skills, and stamina – to race down ice tracks filled with bumps and hairpin turns all around the world, finishing sixth overall in 2012 and 16th in 2013.
