Cameron Naasz had victory and early title celebrations in his sights as he powered through every round with ease.
He could almost feel the championship trophy in his hands as he surged clear in the final, but a stunning slip let the chasing pack in.
And it was his title rival Scott Croxall who sped over the finish line to claim a crucial victory.
